The same kingfisher we know so well from Missouri spends the winter in the Cayman Islands. There he is, hovering mid-air some ten feet above the blue water, searching for small fish. Every part of the kingfisher is moving - there is a pretty fierce wind he must battle - but his head remains perfectly still. Every few minutes or so he dives into the ocean, straight as an arrow. Most of the time he is not successful but every once in a while he emerges with a small fish or crab. He’ll take his catch to a nearby rock or a piece of old coral and enjoy it. Straight back to hovering over the water after that.
